In general, there are two types of seminars: empirical and theoretical. Empirical seminar projects/papers are based on the collection of data, the processing of said data and the presentation of the conclusions reached as a result. Your first seminar paper is probably also the first time you’re required to adhere to the standards of rigorous scientific writing. This type of writing is subject to strict universal norms, and adheres to a very different set of writing standards from the one we use in our daily lives.

In general, there are two types of seminars: empirical and theoretical. Empirical seminar projects/papers are based on the collection of data, the processing of said data and the presentation of the conclusions reached as a result. Theoretical seminar papers are mainly built around literature reviews and the implementation of the theoretical principles reviewed, with respect to a specific issue.

The seminar paper, like all academic writing, will be graded by the professor at your academic institution.  It is, therefore, crucial for the writer to fully understand the requirements and expectations of the professor that will be grading the paper.

Writing a good seminar paper entails: correct usage, integration, and citation of sources seamlessly woven into the paper;  good overall scientific writing ability; and strong evidence/support for the research model or assertions being made.  Academic writing is different from journalistic writing in that it requires theoretical knowledge to be displayed in a manner that will allow the reader to locate and verify your sources via references and a bibliography list.

A seminar paper cannot be written in a jumble of sections which have no logical connection to each other – the text needs to flow smoothly and coherently from beginning to end.

The seminar is invaluable to your studies.  You should, therefore, discuss things thoroughly with your lecturer before undertaking the writing process. Quality seminar writing requires ongoing guidance from the instructor. This guidance is the instructor’s obligation to you.  Thus, you are strongly advised to make use of it in order to improve your grade.

Remember that writing a seminar paper does not require the student to display original insight. Your lecturer does not expect you to innovate or do original research.  You need to read the relevant studies, models, and theories in the field, and then present them to the reader in a coherent, technically detailed and easily understandable manner.
